The Event

To coincide with National Heritage Week, Roscrea Heritage Society is delighted to host an Introduction to Natural Materials & Basket Weaving by Lynn Kirkham. Lynn is a highly skilled Master Basket maker, Multi-media Artist and Sculptor with many of her sculptures becoming popular landmark pieces. Lynn has produced a number of large-scale public artworks in bog oak, bronze and steel, including the spectacular Ghost Horses in Co Kildare, and Bó Bainne, the five life-sized Friesians commissioned by Teagasc in Fermoy, Co Cork.

As one of the first contemporary basket makers in Ireland, Lynn is well-known for her woven artworks. Since the 1990's, sharing and upholding traditional skills has been an important part of her work. Through talks, classes and events, she helped provoke an entire movement in the creative use of willow and other sustainable natural materials.

Lynn frequently works with groups, families and individuals, building artworks from their own ideas, in their own location or at The GreenMantle Studio.

During our event, Lynn will talk you through the use of natural materials such as willow, how it is grown, when it is harvested and what this natural material can be used for. She will have some various sized pieces to showcase on the day and will encourage all those attending to try their hand at making a small piece such as a headband, wreath or coaster to take home.

Location

This event will take place in the stunning setting of the Black Mills. The Black Mills dates from the first half of the 18th century and is located near the 11th century Round Tower and the 12th century Romanesque church. The Black Mills and the surrounding land has been in state care since 1991. When the property came into state care, it was clear that there was an extreme amount of work required if it was to be restored and made accessible to the general public. The acquisition of the property was also seen as an ideal opportunity to protect St Cronan's Cross and to provide interpretive material on the monastic settlement which was located in this part of Roscrea. St Cronan's cross which was located in the church grounds nearby was relocated to the mill to fully protect it for future generations.

As places are limited, tickets (free of charge) must be booked in advance. Roscrea Heritage Society looks forward to welcoming you on the day. Bígí Linn!
